Cristobal has been serving with Athletes in Action for over 25 years. Julio played semi-pro soccer before going on staff with FCA Guatemala. The three of us went to lunch at San Martin, or Guatemala’s version of Panera Bread.

There at the small square table our time was wonderful, yet I felt someone was missing from the conversation. We laughed, dreamed and explored what ministry could be like. We unanimously felt it was the Lord working to bring us together. Wish you could have joined us and filled that fourth seat. Maybe as you read this you are thinking of a person with a heart for sports ministry in a Latino context. Maybe that guy needed to be in the fourth seat.

So what now?

First, pray for God to transform young people into Christ-likeness through sports. Sadly, we acknowledged how Christ’s own church has been a barrier to this. We hope the church going forward will catch a vision of the athletic field as a classroom and huddle time as congregational fellowship.

Second, offer our time and resources to each other. The three of us acknowledged a temptation to seek personal glory. We hope our future efforts will seamlessly serve both the needs of aspiring athletes just beginning their sport, to the Olympic competitors who are well into their career.

Either way, please pray for our Lord to raise up someone. Maybe our Lord has already put it on the heart of an athlete somewhere to offer their gift on the court, or the field.
